MSNBC's Keith Olbermann may try too hard to be Edward R. Murrow sometimes, but this response to California's Proposition 8 is right on the money. This special comment on the recent overturning of gay marriage in the sunshine state pretty well expresses what needs to be said about this decision.
Olbermann is host of Countdown on MSNBC and often uses the show as a platform for passionate speeches like this one, sometimes to an annoyingly soapboxy degree (check out Ben Affleck's spot-on lampoon of the man on SNL), but this issue needs to be addressed and I am impressed by the way Olbermann responds to the vote.
If people are really so hungry for change, it is time to start regarding gay marriage as a civil rights issue. Obama's win seems to have helped this country take a step forward in terms of race, but there continues to be discrimination against gays and lesbians, and this simply must end. If we really want to progress and move forward as a nation, people's attitudes and votes on the issue of gay rights needs to evolve.

In this comment Olbermann, fails to see the validity of the traditional marriage argument. Those in a traditional family have the right to pass this same value system on to their children, through the laws of our society, just as we pass down other values like freedom, equality (I will talk about this), and justice; by changing the definition of marriage we are voting away part of the human heritage, which would be forever lost to future generations. This is why traditional marriage matters to me and to the majority of the people in California.
Denying same-sex marraige is not the same as racial discrimination. In our society we discriminate all the time; we discriminate against college applicants with different SAT scores; we discriminate between employees with more or less experience. Every so often our society finds that it has been discriminating against people based on erroneous distinctions. This was the root of racism; people in our country were saying something about black people based on their skin color; like, this person is not as talented at a certain job or wouldnât be a good husband or wife to a white person because they have black skin. These distinctions were obviously untrue because they were drawn from an arbitrary physical quality, which has no bearing on love or job performance, skin pigmentation.
It is perfectly normal for us to draw distinctions between people based on choices and physical traits that hold weight to a certain situation. A person born without arms doesnât become a steel worker; a blind woman canât become a fighter pilot; people like me, who are terrible at baseball, donât become professional baseball players. We also draw distinctions base on choices. We are allowed to hire Engineering majors to be engineers instead of English majors and vise versa. This is allowed in our society, else why arenât the blind protesting to fly airliners?
My point is that it is perfectly normal in the laws of our nation to disallow marriage between people of the same-sex, because sexuality is related to marriage. It is a civil right to be able to love anyone you want, it is not a civil right to be able to marry someone of the same gender, at least until the law is changed to provide that civil right. And it is perfectly within my civil rights to disagree and keep the definition the same.
Letâs be honest with ourselves. The No on 8 campaign isnât fighting for any real right (the real ones are already had through same-sex unions), only for the general acceptance of the homosexual life-style, and ideology by the broader society. This is only a fight over what the value basis of society should be. Keith thinks marriage is between any two humans, I say it is between and man and a woman. So stop your propaganda over equality and civil rights, thatâs just PR hot air. This is just about your ideology and how you want our society based on it. I have my vote and you have yours. Youâre trying to take away my right to live in a world where my children donât have to be confused by the choice between marrying a boy or a girl; to live in a world where homosexual behavior is marginalized just like drug-addiction (notice that I mentioned behavior not people, because people change); to live in a world where marriage is between a man and a woman. I understand it is normal for our laws to discriminate against people, and it is within your right to disagree with questioning them. No one is trying to take away that right, and I find it almost laughable that you would consider what Kieith says an affront to your rights. You who are a member of the sexual majority have never had your rights challenged, and if you feel that this proposition is a challenge to marriage or tradition, you're thinking about it in the wrong way. You will not be affected by gay marriage nor will the so-called sanctiity of the institution. The fight is for a very real right, as same-sex unions do not offer the same legal statues as marriage nor do they gharbor the same respect towards the couple involved. Can't we just admit this is an issue of intolerance against gays and not an issue of marriage?Allowing other human beings the same rights as you cannot possibly be an affront to anything. I find it interesting that you use the term "slippery slope" as though it strengthens your argument. The slippery slope is a logical fallacy that weakens and discredits an argument. Gay marriage is not going to lead to bestiality, incest, pedophilia, or the end of days as the Lord rains hellfire upon the heathens. This is simply not a valid argument.
As far as homosexuality being "normal", what makes something unorthodox immediately abberant? How many gay people have you every met and or talked with? None of them made a choice about their sexuality, and many that I've known have said if they could make the choice they would rather be straight, because there is a whole culture of conformist bigots out there who refuse to accept them as human beings.
I'm not going to argue with you here, because this is the internet and the internet is dumb and full of dumb people who think they're right, myself included. I will accomplish nothing trying to convince you of anything, but I would hope that you would listen to the message in Olbermann's comment with an open mind. Why don't I have the Constitutional Right to keep my children from having to grow up in a society where your offensive religious principles are displayed? At the end of the day, it's the same difference. And further, if you're looking to legislate the society into compliance with your personal view of what is acceptable and what is not acceptable on the basis of what your children are exposed to, it's time for you to grow up. Way to opt out of having to parent: if you feel so strongly against something, let your children know. I'm sure you would be equally as horrified if they converted to a religion that you found antithetical to your beliefs. Does that mean we can also vote to prevent those religions from assembling, all in some vain effort to "preserve" YOUR society, YOUR views, YOUR needs, and YOUR prejudices?
Funny how you only think it's liberty when you have the right to keep society under YOUR thumb, not free of any thumbs so that all can live as they please. I have to compromise what I'd actually like to be the case everyday by having to exist in the same nation as a bigot like you; likewise, part of individual liberty means that everyone else has that same freedom and burden to compromise. Let me get this one strait in a manner of speaking. You Justify Denial of the right and union of marriage based on qualifications? Like Marriage was a Legit Job, or a Managed Service projects? On what grounds is one "Qualified" to be married? The Only thing I am left so Confused about is why you and others out there, why are you so against it, when in all and all, if you truly accepted their life choice, or didn't care, or wanted to see Same sex couples hurt, or even don't know them, why does it bother you so badly to think that a gay or a lez couple are together? It would make more sense to let them get married (for those who wanted them to hurt, watch the attempts fall apart and the legal process tear the apart, or for those who don't know them, Ignore the weddings like you do every other one that goes on within the states, for those who accepted their life choice, be happy for them because they found someone that they can help weather this planet with.)

I want to tell you a story about the death of Wisdom. A very, very long time

most god-like for them. And fight well for iâve made You mightiest among Earthsâ

When I fold up the material Universe with Everything in it and go to the

Who has committed such a crime?

How did this come about?

Is the gate still open to ALL who seek me?

So the curse is loosed upon the Earth. The door is open but no man can pass!
He claims all of heaven as his personal property through his namesake. The WORDS
still have the power to throw open the veil of Death but theyâre surrendering to a
corpse sickle instead of surrendering to No-Mind, no I AM.
They lap up WORDS like a dog returning to consume itsâ own vomit.
Impossible! Anyone who has seen Me would know better than to say his or
her tiny I AM could ever contain the WHOLE! To be with Me means the surrender of
the I AM back to the sea of No-Mind. No man can come to ME and keep words and
names. How was this done?
He uses deadly black magic on his victims.

But his I AM is in the way of the Light.
So the Way isnât open equally to all Children who seek it?
No they stand in awe of the one who claims to have discovered it and they ignore the
treasure he uses as bait.
How can they simply not look past him?
He claims it for himself alone. They call him the only begotten son of god.

Yes MAâAM, he claims he mastered death but admits he doesnât know when the end
will come to godsâ creation. He confuses the death of his small world with the death
of God.
What happened to him Wisdom?
He said that he possessed YOU for himself alone.
Someone uses the gate of another? One comes to the gate with the Words, I AM and a
name. They leave with Everything in Nothing and shall remain eternally Nameless!
If he surrendered enough to see ME and yet turned away, that one fell into the void of
gnashing teeth. Not of your world and not with ME either. He was spit out of his own
mouth.
He couldnât rule heaven so he blocks the WAY for all who seek it. Instead of
showing the surrender and death of the I AM he has them worshipping it! They
vanquish to the depths their own I AM without consuming it and imagine the reality
of his I AM and clutch for dear life to it also. Evil is the separation from god through
the WORD and the NAME. This found itsâ best expression through the I AM called
jesus christ. Hereâs one I AM saying; no one gets HOME except by me instead of
through the death of ME. At least Buddha said if you meet the Buddha along the road,
kill him. The Tao that can be spoken (or written) is not the real Tao.
And he demonstrates no path, no way, only stupid chants and prayers in his
name only. Yes, they cling to the idea that he grew up for all of US and now we donât
have to finish our own evolution.
Wait a minute; you people stopped growing over 2000 years ago! That planet must be
a complete madhouse by now!
Yes MAâAM! They put the poison right in with the cure and anyone who pointed out
the trick was branded a heretic and put to death without a fair trial. They raped Lady
Justice and their only defense was to say she actually wanted it.

Also, you mention the "confusion" of whether to marry a boy or a girl. Do you honestly think that allowing both will lead to confusion? Let me tell you, far more people are confused as it stands right now, because society tells them that they must love a member of the opposite sex and marry a member of the opposite sex...but their hormones tell them something else entirely. Opening up marriage to members of the same sex won't *create* confusion, it'll *resolve* it.
I would also like to know where people have gotten this idea of "traditional marriage" from. There's nothing traditional about it! Marriage by church and state is actually only a couple of hundred years old. Or perhaps you'd like the traditional Greek marriage where a 30-year-old man could marry a 13-year-old girl and she would be expected to cook and clean and keep house for him and nothing else. Was that the "traditional" marriage you wanted?
And finally, sadly, people seem to think that popular opinion is the best opinion and apparently in your mind, the only one that matters and what laws should be based on. As stated in KO's commentary, popular opinion not that long ago was that black people should be slaves to be seen and not heard, who had no rights beyond the right to work for free for their entire lives at a job of their owner's choice. Are you *sure* that the only way to judge whose value system to use is to put it to a vote? Honestly?
