John McCain faced one of his toughest opponents of the election last night: David Letterman. The Late Show host has been waiting to take a crack at the presidential hopeful ever since McCain ditched Letterman to "rush" back to Washington to "work on the bailout."

In order to smooth over the brush-off, McCain went for the cutesy wootsy approach. When Letterman asks point blank what happened, McCain just gives an aw shucks shrug and chuckles his way through the answer "I screwed up." He even joked that he hadn't had this much fun since his last interrogation. *Cringe.* Are we really joking about those POW days?

Unfortunately for Blinky, the questions got more pointed from there. In response, to McCain's accusations of a connection between Obama and William Ayers, Letterman shot back, tying McCain to Watergate evildoer Gordon Liddy. So the guy made a mistake or two, perhaps plotted to create a fire-bomb diversion and landed his ass in jail... why should McCain be embarrassed to know him?

Besides the uncomfortable jokes and painful attempts to sound like Average Joe (not to be confused with Joe Six Pack or Joe the Plumber), McCain also whips out some of the classic bizarre facial expressions.
