Video: Boston College Fan Throws Fake Penalty Flag, Announcers Thrown For A Loop

If you don’t like a call, just take matters into your own hands. That was the theory of one Boston College student at BC’s football game against Virginia Tech this weekend.

When a referee fails to call pass interference, a penalty flag makes it onto the field anyway. Turns out an overzealous fan threw it in from the stands. It was made from a cut up shirt weighted with pennies, but it didn’t fool the refs… though it did throw off the announcers.

In fact, the penalty flag situation happens in the first 15 seconds or so of the poor quality video, but the announcers go on to talk about it for the next two minutes. The insightful commentary includes gems like, “That’s the first time I’ve seen a flag come out of the stands. I’ve seen other things come out of the stands.” Hmm, right.

Best moment of the video (faux flagging aside)? The referee on the elliptical. Look at him go!
