Bring On Disease: We're in Good Shape

Bring On Disease: We're in Good Shape
This is not science fiction: it's just harsh reality.

Who gets help if a pandemic breaks out? We do. We're young, strong, resilient... I mean, as long as you don't have cancer, you're good to go. Doctors have put together a list of people they'll "let die" if a pandemic flu were to break out.

Here's a list of those less fortunate:

- People older than 85.

- Those with severe trauma, which could include critical injuries from car crashes and shootings.

- Severely burned patients older than 60.

- Those with severe mental impairment, which could include advanced Alzheimer's disease.

- Those with a severe chronic disease, such as advanced heart failure, lung disease or poorly controlled diabetes.

It's a shocking list to read but should it be? Despite Larry the Cable Guy's catch phrase sweeping the nation, we have lost the ability to make do or die decisions. It seems that Americans think that all situations (plagues, wars, recession) will just work out with little or no effort. We refuse to drive less, we refuse to end frivolous spending, we refuse to take responsibility for our own actions. We have become complacent, dangerously complacent. Posted 05/28/2008 09:45 AMReply
