College Students Rejoice: Government Considering Condoning Marijuana Use

If a proposal by Democratic Massachusetts Congressman Barney Frank comes to pass, people possesing up to 100 grams (3.5 ounces) of marijuana would no longer be subject to arrest. The proposal, titled HR 5843, would also allow the "nonprofit transfer" of up to an ounce of marijauna. Basically, you can pass your friends the joint, but don't ask for money.

Frank's reasoning? He opposes using tax dollars to condone what he believes is a 'phony war on drugs" which is "filling up our prisons" instead of targeting real criminals. A marijuana smoker is arrested every 38 seconds in the US, and Frank finds this preposterous.

"I don't think it is the government's business to tell you how to spend your leisure time," said Frank. ""We do not arrest and jail responsible alcohol drinkers,"--why should we do so for responsible marijuana users?

From Nashville, Tennessee: Kudos and bongs to Representative Barney Frank!

What do YOU think? Should carrying small amounts of marijuana be legalized?

Yes please! So much time and money is wasted pursuing "criminal" pot users. Pass the joint.

No. Marijauna is a harmful drug.

Who cares? I'll smoke that sh*t anyway.

agreed the government is out of touch and needs to put more energy into issues such as lowering gas prices, stopping illegal immigrants from 'polluting' our country, and controlling more harmful substances like crystal meth and heroine...not mary jane. Posted 08/01/2008 09:15 AMReply

I agree with Barney Frank and the rest of the Liberal leaning politicians in Congress. Marijuana is "the tree of life", in my opinion. That being said, the title of this article isn't helpful to the cause. Saying the government would condone any "drug" use is the wrong way to get the point across. More of these headlines will deter the U.S. Congress from voting in favor of this legislation. Posted 08/01/2008 2:37 PMReply

Anyone who believes pot is illegal because it is a dangerous drug has been conned by prohibitionists. OTOH if you want to increase the danger of ANY drug, just drive it underground. Posted 08/03/2008 02:04 AMReply
