Homecoming Week at UNC

Homecoming Week at UNC

This week is homecoming at UNC-Chapel Hill. This means activities in the Pit every day this week including free food and prizes (a full schedule can be seen here). There will also be bar nights and musical performances, including yesterday's Avett Brothers concert (which was amazing), tonight's Gym Class Heroes concert, Brendan James on Wednesday, and performances by student groups.

Homecoming week also means that people will be campaigning for something other than the presidential election: homecoming king and queen. The winners receive money for a service project, so keep each candidates' project in mind when you vote instead of just closing your eyes and voting for whoever you happen to click on. The candidates for homecoming queen are:

  • Sophia Estrada--Latino high school student symposium: bring Latin American students to UNC-CH to learn about the educational system and scholarship opportunities in order to promote diversity within the university
  • Kennetra Irby--Durham County youth outreach:connect student organizations at UNC-CH with the Durham County youth home in order to help underpriveleged children
  • Meredith Martindale--Tanzania pen pal program: establish a pen pal program between students at Chapel Hill High School and Tanzanian students
  • Kaila Ramsey--Weekend for underrepresented: students from areas of North Carolina that are underrepresented at UNC-CH would be invited to the school for the weekend to learn about college

The candidates for king are:

  • Jeremy Crouthamel--Symposium against gang violence: a series of three speakers will speak to kids in middle school or above about gang violence and related issues
  • Donovan Livingston--Poetree literature program: high school juniors and seniors will participate in workshops and will eventually give a performance alongside local poets and performers

Students can vote for homecoming king and queen on campus or on studentcentral between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. on Wednesday. (All information about homecoming king and queen came from Today's Daily Tar Heel supplement.)

And of course homecoming week will culminate with the UNC (No. 19) vs. Georgia Tech (No. 22) game on Saturday at noon. Go Heels!
