Laptop Thief On the Loose at UGA

UGA police are warning students to watch out for their laptops. Since the beginning of the year, laptops have been disappearing from dorm rooms at an alarming rate. It looks like the perpetrator is taking advantage of open or unlocked doors. Although no one’s identity seems to be in jeopardy, there is a very slim chance that any of the stolen laptops will turn up. Police speculate that the thief is selling the computer parts for money.

To ensure the safety of your personal belongings, including your laptop, make sure you lock your doors. People are quick to believe that nothing will happen but they are only creating a window of opportunity for the thief. It is also a bad idea to leave your laptop in your car since it can be broken into.

Police claim that the perpetrator is not your stereotypical thief. UGA Police Chief Jimmy Williamson believes that he or she is “blending in very well in this environment.” He offers students some tips to prevent more laptop thefts.
