Summer is a great time to take a few classes and maybe catch up on those gen eds, or maybe get ahead so you can graduate early. Actually summer is a horrible time to take classes. While all your friends are at the beach or just lounging somewhere, you're stuck in Central Pennsylvania. But if you've got to be here you might as well take a fun course ... like one on being a man.
Maybe you've taken a Woman's Studies class at some point in your college career. If you're a man, it always seems like it's a good idea. The class is probably going to be full of women and it might impress some girl at a party or something. But then you realize that just because you're male, there's no way you're going to get more than a B in the class. But it's about time some school offer a course on men, and so now we have - Sociology 297A: Men and Masculinities.
A description of the course says it "is an introductory survey course that critically examines the construction of masculinities in numerous contexts. Primarily grounded in the social sciences, the course will require students to explore how masculinity is situated within education, work, family, health, popular culture, sexuality, and politics in the U.S. and transnationally. Students will examine the intersections of race, ethnicity, class, and sexuality with how masculinities are constructed-- is masculinity something we each do? have? perform? define for ourselves? question? challenge?"
Whatever! So you're telling me there's nothing about sports and beer? What kind of fool is putting this course together?
Anyway, according to the registrar's website only two of the 35 seats are filled. So if you want to learn what it means to be a man, and get three credits while you're at it, here's your opportunity. I wonder if they cover what it feels like when you accidentally sit on your balls.
