Surfer, Dude Premieres In Austin With UT Alum McConaughey Mostly Shirtless

Matthew McConaughey has been spending some time in Austin, TX recently. It is the home of his alma mater after all.

While actor showed his newborn son Levi some Longhorn spirit at the game this Saturday, his visit isn’t all about pleasure. His new comedy, “Surfer, Dude” premieres tonight in Austin and opens to wider audiences Sept. 12.

It’s questionable whether the world needs another surfer movie, but there’s no doubt the world needs more shirtless Matthew McConaughey, so it can’t all be bad. Plus, the director and co-writer is McConaughey’s childhood friend who encouraged him to get into acting in the first place. So we have S. R. Bindler to thank for the bare-chested pictures splayed all over the tabloids.

Austin360.com spoke with the duo about their childhood, about their careers and about shoes (but that’s another story). Can you imagine, Mr. McConaughey, J.D.? No? Then look no further than Bindler:

At UT, McConaughey and Bindler, who was deep in film studies in New York, were mutual sounding boards. McConaughey entertained law school until Bindler suggested film.

"He even suggested acting before I thought it was a possible occupation," McConaughey says. "I'd never even dreamed of it. He gave me the confidence to go to film school."

It was actually at UT that McConaughey got his first break, playing David Wooderson in “Dazed and Confused.” Now, 15 years later, the actor is still starring in a stoner flick, but “Surfer, Dude” looks to be no “Dazed and Confused.”

Still, as long as there are gratuitous shots of tanned and toned McConaughey, the females will come flocking.
