Rumors floated around last fall that then-presidential hopeful John Edwards was having an affair with one of his campaign staffers. Eh, big deal, right? He wouldn't be a politician without a tawdry affair or two -- even though his wife is sick with cancer.
Now, however, the rumors have taken a new turn and the National Enquirer is insisting that the former staffer, Rielle has given birth to Edwards' daughter, and even that Edwards has visited both mother and child in L.A. National media has for the most part declined to take the rumor seriously until this week, when reporters from several news outlets have been rebuffed by Edwards and his camp. The only response he has made is calling the Enquirer's story "tabloid trash".
But that's not enough to satisfy his supporters. The Democratic Party, among others, is now calling for Edwards to address -- and hopefully dismiss -- these rumors once and for all. If not, he risks losing the privilege to speak at the national convention later this month.
What do you think? Is there any truth to the rumors? Does his silence signify something? Is John the new Bill, and then some?
