Seeing as hip-hop has been sadly underrepresented in my recent posts on the local music scene, I thought I’d rectify that. Here are two and a half really good local rap acts.
Little Brother is from Durham and is kind of a big deal, even in national circles. (You can get their most recent mixtape in its entirety here).
Language Arts is from Durham / Chapel Hill. Half of the two members even went to school here before dropping out. They have been largely overlooked by things like the radio, but they remain one of the few acts that bothers to write insightful, articulate lyrics – and, more importantly, they’ve got some really great beats (You can get their 2004 release in its entirety here).
Electronic Correspondence is a UNC grad as of Sunday. He makes mash-ups in the style of Girl Talk, Party Ben, or Norwegian Recycling, which, I guess, kind of almost qualifies as rap. (You can download all his songs here).
