Do You Get Accosted on the Streets of Your College Town?

I'm just not sure how to feel about this.  On a street 4 blocks from Notre Dame's campus I was walking to my house and a wide, short woman in a pink jump suit came up to me yelling stuff I couldn't really understand until I shook her hand.  "I got diabetes, is my face swollen? Look I was riding, somewhere over there is the hospital, but we was driving, and now I need to get home awww hell, help me get home! Pray for me. My name is...(something I can't understand/pronounce/spell)."

Truthfully, I just was not expecting someone to unintelligibly ask me for money, like we live in some big city. This is South Bend, Indiana (yea, no one ever knows Notre Dame is in South Bend).  It has a ghetto feelling at night, and really isn't the safest neighborhood.  I had no idea what to do, and before I know it I reached in my back pocket and looked at the 2 bills I found.  One is a single and the other, a ten, and she sees them both, then crazy-talks to me more, "Oh yea, all I need is that 10, gimme that 10 that's all I need, come onnnn, yea the ten, help me!

For some reason I fork over the 10.  Then she hugs me.  I'm suddenly well aware that she may not have been a diabetic -- her face was a little puffy -- and this could have been some crazy woman's money-making scheme.  She was accosting me pretty ridiculously.  There's a good chance I was swindled out of $10, but then again, there's a chance I actually helped someone today.  I'm just not sure how I feel about this.

How many other colleges have to deal with similar situations and why are so many good schools in bad areas? Leave a comment.
