Well not yet, but Barack Obama did win the Mock Election held on Notre Dame's campus. A total of 2,692 undergraduate students participated in the vote which resulted in 52.6% for Barack Obama & Joe Biden opposed to 41.1% John McCain & ”Dont-Ya-Kno” Palin.
Obviously, this is a small poll of college students, but this poll may be a more accurate forecast for the election than you may think. Granted, colleges tend to be a hotbed for dirty liberals (pun warning: a “hot” bed for “dirty” people), Notre Dame is one of the more conservative schools in the country. Some of our professors are priests, there are no co-ed dorms, and parietals restrict any student from being in a dorm of the other sex past 12am on weekdays. Yeah. With over 80% of students being Catholic, this isn’t another stereotypical left-wing college.
With that said, I was pretty surprised that Obama won by over an 11% spread, but not as surprised that 1.4% of the students chose to wait in a long line just to vote “abstain.” Come on, those who vote abstain are the only people that shouldn’t vote (well, them and the cast of vh1’s “I Love Money”), so keep your indecision to yourself.
If this mock election is an accurate forecast for the presidential election than not only will America have its first black president, but ½ the population won’t know the election occured, 2/3rds won’t vote, and there will be one write-in ballot for someone named “Zebapalooza.”
