Ahhhh four twenty. It is a term often used, yet more often misunderstood. Everyone knows that "Four Twenty" has something to do with drug culture, but most people have their own opinion about why or how the term got into existence. The term supposedly started at San Rafael High School in 1971 with a small group of kids who used to use the term "four twenty" as a signal to meet in front of a specific statue at 4:20 pm in the afternoon to smoke marijuana after school. That’s it; twelve kids getting high in California spawned an international term for weed smoking.
These days there are COUNTLESS FALSE RUMORS about what the term 420 actually stands for. Here are a few and their factual relevance:
""4:20" is some sort of police code for pot smoking"
FALSE
~However, on 1/1/2004 a Californian Governor signed the "California Senate Bill 420" which regulates medicinal marijuana use. Keep in mind, the term started in 1971! Therefore this is an example of the tail wagging the dog.
"There are 420 chemical compounds in marijuana"
FALSE
~High Times Magazine says that there are 315 chemicals in organic weed.
Albert Hofmann experienced the first LSD trip ever at 4:20 pm on April 16th, 1943."
TRUE
~Although Albert Hofmann's lab notes do confirm that his experience occurred at 4:20 pm, this is most likely just a strange coincidence. Albert Hofmann was synthesizing the 25th extraction of Lysergic Acid Diethylamide when he mysteriously started having symptoms experienced by those who ingest LSD, yet he didn't ingest any and he was working with sterol equipment in a very clean and professional scientific laboratory. This strange experience caused him to go back, reexamine the 25th extraction, and eventually create and share LSD with the world.
April 20th is Hitler's birthday
TRUE
~Hitler was born on 4/20/1889, but once again this is just a strange coincidence. I imagine if Hitler smoked a little more pot, the world would have been a lot better off.
"420" has undoubtedly made its way into current culture. Many (but not all) of the clocks in Pulp Fiction are set to 4:20 and the score of the football game in Fast Times at Ridgemont High was 42-0. On the West Coast the majority of teenagers fully relate the time 4:20 with pot smoking and April 20th has become somewhat of a holiday.

In Eugene, Oregon there are hippies everywhere! If you take a stroll through any public park in Eugene on April 20th, especially right around 4:20 pm, I will GARENTEE that you will find MORE THAN YOUR FARE SHARE of pot-smoking buddies.
