Icelandic artist Olafur Eliason has literally transformed New York City. In addition to creating exhibitions for MOMA and its satellite, PS1, Olafur built four waterfalls that are distributed throughout the East River. Inspired by the natural beauty of his home country, he was hoping to remind New Yorkers that they live surrounded by water – a fact that is surprisingly easy to forget. Unfortunately, they won’t be here for long: they are only scheduled to last through October, and fickle Olafur recently turned down several million to let an office building keep an artificial sun installation he had created for their courtyard.
