Like Taking Candy from a Baby, Brown

Jill Greenberg was a featured artist at Brown a few years back, when her End Times exhibit was touring the country.  The exhibit involved giving candy to children, and then taking it away, before snapping the shots.  My roommate told me about seeing the exhibit, and I was enthralled.  This morning she sent me some pictures of the exhibit, which are as brilliant as I'd expected:

What I found out in researching the artist is even more fascinating than the crying children photographs: Greenberg was hired by The Atlantic to shoot John McCain for the October 2008 issue of the magazine.  As Greenberg is known for her disapproval of the Bush administration and the Christian Fundamentalism, this seemed a risky decision for The Atlantic to make in hiring her, so I don't really see why anyone there was surprised when Greenberg admitted to purposely shooting McCain in an unfavorable light!

If you visit Greenberg's website, The Manipulator, and click "Names" and look for John McCain, you'll find the one remaining picture that's still on her site.  Her photo shoot caused a lot of public outcry: McCain was mad, The Atlantic was really mad, and a whole lot of other people were, too, but I applaud Greenberg for sticking to her guns and holding true to her belief system, even if it meant alienating The Atlantic (and McCain) as a client.  Whatever, this woman's got so many celebrities under her belt that she doesn't need the grief!  Go Greenberg!
