Packing Schoellkopf (pronounced shull-koephffuh) Stadium on Saturday, thousands of Cornell students and alumni were treated to dozens of free t-shirts launched into the crowd by a handheld cannon, hundreds of free "Go Big Red" miniature foam footballs, and an official tailgating party featuring beer, barbecues, and good cheer.
Also, the football team won by a few points, or something.
"Oh, yeah, it's great!" said alumnus Harold Washtons '75. "Just like the old days--only now they fire the t-shirts into the air. Oh! Here one comes!" As the Cornell Big Red recovered a fumble on the opponent's 20 yard line, effectively securing an early victory, an entire section of people cheered as the $5 t-shirt headed in their direction.
"Whew!" said Washtons, losing the shirt to a 12-year-old. "That one was close."
Asked for his comments following the game, head coach Jim Knowles ignored any questions, hoping to get to the soft pretzel stand "before [they] get cold."
