Following in a nation-wide trend, the University of Chicago will now be offering co-ed dorm rooms, Associated Press reports. Currently, more than 30 campuses allow girls and boys to share dorm rooms together, including Stanford, Brown, UPenn, and Weslyan.
A letter was sent out last week letting parents know that the school would begin allowing boys and girls to dorm together:
The school says it was a student-led initiative that isn't aimed at romantic couples. However, the school says couples won't be banned from asking to be roommates when the program begins next month.
The school also said that they will call the program "open-housing", and that freshman will not be allowed to participate. They also made clear that students will never be assigned mixed-gender housing, instead it will be on a request basis.
While I appreciate a more open college experience, I can't help but question how well this work. First thing you know, a couple that is "in love" will get a room together, but won't be prepared for the stresses of living together. And then you're going to have them fighting and asking to be moved, and finding spaces for students to live is already hard enough for many Universities.
But what do you guys think? College Co-Ed living the way to go? Let me know.
