22-Year-Old USC Student Fatally Stabbed 3 Blocks North of Campus

22-Year-Old USC Student Fatally Stabbed 3 Blocks North of Campus

Fox 11 News and KTLA are reporting that a 22-year-old male student was fatally wounded during an altercation on Orchard St. and 28th or 29th last night, a few blocks north of campus.

Not much is known about the situation yet, but sources say that the two men got into a fight when the student was walking home from a nearby house party. The suspect, also in his twenties, stabbed the victim in the chest, then fled on foot. The student was rushed to the hospital, but later passed away at 2:10 a.m.

I can confirm by ear that police units, as well as police and news helicopters are still swarming campus and the surrounding area, having started doing so at about 1:45 am this morning.  KTLA Television Morning News said that, as of right now, police copters were not searching for suspects, just checking out the area-- though it seems strange that they'd still be here. More updates as the story develops and more information is released.

UPDATE:

USC Students received an email at 8:05a this morning, confirming the identity of the murdered student as Bryan Richard Frost:

I regret to inform the USC community of the tragic death of one of our own. Cinematic Arts student Bryan Richard Frost was stabbed during an early morning off campus altercation, and was pronounced dead after transport to California Hospital. After the stabbing, the assailant fled the scene. The incident is being aggressively investigated by LAPD. I know that you all join me in sympathy for Bryan’s family and friends. Anyone affected by this tragedy is asked to contact the Student Counseling center at 213 740 8742 or Student Affairs at 213 740 2421.

With this and some terrible assaults that happened at Cardinal Gardens, students need to be sure to keep extra safe. Be careful, my fellow Trojans. I'm sure there's something to be said about improving safety in this area, but that's another post for another day.

RIP Bryan and condolences to the Frost family and friends.

" I'm sure there's something to be said about improving safety in this area, but that's another post for another day."

I hope there is a post about this another day, and soon. Consider the brain trust at USC, the money that comes into that university...you think they might address the reality that they are surrounded by slums. USC is an island, but do they tell this to prospective students? Will they inform next year's incoming freshmen that in the first MONTH of the 2008-2009 school year, there were two sexual assualts and a murder in local housing?

How can USC continue to put their students in jeopardy? What's the solution? I don't know, but I think it's possible that if this world-leading research university put their mind to it, they might come up with a solution. But I'll offer this: buy out the slums that surround your exceptionally wealthy school. Buy them out and improve them. Make your part of the city a safe place to live in. Didn't George Lucas recently give the school 175 million? Where are you spending that USC?

to the anon commented above...Have you ever been to USC? Or do you know anything about it? Because that's what SC does. We buy out the whole surrounding area and put millions in to the local community to improve the area.

I will wait until all the details are out on the altercation. But this goes beyond SC being in a bad area.

My Reply:

You need to shut your mouth. The point is that someone is dead. All other things to come will come. However the main focus is on a life lost, moron. this is coming from a friend of his.

I have to say that USC works hard everyday to produce the highest level of safety for its students and all other members of the Trojan Family. At the same time, we as have to admit that it is their job to "protect us, not Babysit us". I am in no way, disrespecting the deceased and his family; no one deserves to be hurt in any way, but reality is, that the majority of the time, our actions have led us to regrettable consequences.
Think about it, and let me know if it's true or not.

This is really sad. A young promising life; gone.

I grew up and own a home in the neighborhood and I must say some of you college kids have no street smarts. Walk away kids, walk away. Some of our local kids have no respect for life and resent having rich white college kids walking their neighborhoods.

Don't ever forget you go to school in the inner-city where anything can happen. USC does a lot of positive things for the community, but some people resent the fact that SC is practically "eminent domaining" entire neighborhoods.

Also, i've called LAPD several times complaining about the noise, public drinking, urinating, etc that happens in front of my property on Friday and Saturday nights.

Nothing justifies this, but at 2:00 am; especially if alcohol and drugs are thrown in the mix; not a good can happen.

In the backyard of a frat at Cal a few months ago, the Cal student DIED at the hospital:

"Police reports indicate a verbal exchange between students and others escalated into a physical fight which led to the stabbing." That was May 7th, 2008 at UC Berkeley.

Yet no one is talking about the Cal campus being unsafe. Get real, these types of tragic events happen with young men in lots of college communities around the country.

Any description of the killer? Posted 09/19/2008 12:30 PMReply

the caught him. Early twenties, not a cal student, wondered in to the frat yard and evidently was very angry or very scared to pull out a knife and stab someone.
his father is now arguing that the dead cal student provoked his son. but do the circumstances really matter, they didn't know each other, got in a verabl fight, and now somebody is dead...senseless

The corner of 29th and 28th has section 8 housing property that in my opinion possess a serious threat to the neighborhood. It would be wise if USC and the community came together to remove these properties from the area. Posted 09/19/2008 10:37 PMReply
