A new “university” called The School of Life has recently launched in London and is set to specialize in “cultural solution to everyday ailments.” Formed by a group of artists, writers and intellectuals, the school will offer six-week courses at a going rate of 195 pounds, which is approximately $382 American dollars. Subjects will include life, love, work, family and politics. Anyone can register for classes, but The School of Life ideally calls for prospective students who seek an "intellectual and personal adventure."
Although this may not be for everyone, I could think of a couple people who might benefit from a lesson or two in life—and by "a couple people," I mean celebrities. Two hundred years ago, nay one hundred, famous people were considered to be artists (i.e. painters, sculptors, etc.), writers, musical composers, respectable world leaders—today, we have talent-less Hollywood actors, celebrity bloggers, teen pop stars on the verge of being porn stars, and politicians who can’t be taken seriously. What has the world come to?
Thanks to this London “university,” I have a few recommendations in mind of celebrities who should get a degree in “life”; finally, something worthwhile to spend their money on.
Lindsay Lohan
The School of Life advertises that its audiences “are characterized by curiosity, sociability, open-mindedness and an appetite for life.” One look at the word “curiosity,” and I immediately think of LiLo (unfortunately). These days, Lindsay has been rumored to be exploring her sexuality with some female DJ. Who knows? Lindsay could be a perfect fit for this university—let’s just hope she has “an appetite for life” because she sure as hell doesn’t have one for food.
Miley Cyrus
Other courses will draw on the ideas of Plato, Shakespeare, Tolstoy and Freud, and what they “had to say about compassion, empathy and self-love.” Ah, self-love. At last, Miley Cyrus can learn the difference between narcissism and humility. It’s no question whether or not the Hannah Montana star is self-loving. The pictures speak for themselves. I’m not saying self-adoration is a bad thing—in fact, philosophers consider it essential—but this 15-year-old needs to learn the basics before she tackles more than she can handle.
Paris Hilton
Called one of the most boring celebrities, Paris Hilton needs a few tips on how to hold a proper and interesting conversation. The School of Life is just the place for her. Instructors will offer “lessons in how to make more scintillating conversation at dinner parties.” From Paris’s interviews alone, it’s easy to see "like" how hard "like" it would be to hold "like" a 5 minute conversation with "like" this "like" woman.
Justin Timberlake
Although the smooth-talkin’ boy band heartthrob-turned-R&B pop star has a natural way of attracting the ladies, it’s been difficult for him to find “the one” to settle down with. From Britney Spears to Alyssa Milano to Janet Jackson to Cameron Diaz and now Jessica Biel, JT is making his rounds. Yet with help from The School of Life, he can attend a course in “love” and discover “why relationships are so complicated and why attraction ebbs and flows"—and also the fact that "what goes around" doesn't necessarily always "come around."
