College Freak Accidents: **it Happens

A woman in Australia is facing charges of manslaughter after a BDSM session with her husband caused him to die of asphyxiation. CNN is calling it a ‘bondage gone wrong’, but it’s nothing short of a freak accident. Although often seen in the movies, incidents similar to this one do happen in real life—not only in real life, but in college life too:

• At a college in Australia, an aspiring design student took an ordinary trip to the john one day only to find himself at the wrong place at the wrong time. While walking through the building corridor, a large piece of a human statue broke off, smashed the glass in a nearby swinging door—sending shards in the direction of the student and subsequently slicing off the nerves and tendons of his right thumb.

• On this CollegeHumor video, these Einsteins had a brilliant idea of driving down an open road and rolling a bowling ball off a ramp. Not so sure what results they were hoping to yield, but they got what they asked for.

• College students aren’t the only victims of freak accidents. An assistant professor at Victor Valley College experienced a Final Destination-like death when 14 inches of an archery bow penetrated his skull.

• Fortunately, a few people do survive such incidents. A soccer player from the University of Nebraska recovered from an 8-inch shard of glass that lodged into her back after a glass table she was sitting on collapsed. The jagged piece cut into her ureter, punctured a kidney, and chipped a vertebrae. It was a few centimeters off from paralyzing the athlete.

• The starting kicker for USC football was found dead at the bottom of a 120-foot cliff one morning. Investigators ruled out foul play, but the freak accident continues to stun family, friends and fellow students of the athlete who had only missed 2 field goals in his entire 3-year playing career.
