While all the ruckus among college students these days is Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama (60% of Democrats under 30 voted for Obama in the primaries compared to 34% of young Reps for McCain), the College Republican National Committee (CRNC) is trying to strengthen the young GOP representation by sending four college students and grads on a political venture across the country. Their mission? To drive 2,500 miles coast-to-coast through only Republican controlled districts.
In June, Chris Caraballo (USC), Christie Jackson (Clemson University), Kerry Donnelly (Fordham University), and Jeremy Harrell (University of Miami, Ohio) began their journey in Florida and will eventually end up in California by August. Currently, they are in Gahanna, Ohio. I can tell you which states they've traversed, the streets they've driven on, and I even know the exact coordinates of their location. You can too.
The website of project, Where is the Red?, makes it incredibly easy to "stalk" the team of four; that's because they want you to! By using virtually all popular social networking websites (Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, MySpace, YouTube), you can keep yourself up to date with their current location and statuses--whether it be "watching the phils/mets game," "getting a headache," or going "door-to-door in Gahanna, OH."
It's heartening to know that Caraballo, Jackson, Donnelly, and Harrell are doing more than just wasting a ridiculous amount of gasoline on their rented Ford Explorer. Besides documenting their trip through blogging and film, they have dedicated their time to helping out fellow Republican supporters, candidates and volunteers.
All you college student Reps can come out from hiding now. There's no need to feel intimidated by them Dems thanks to the stronger presence of CRNC.
