Tuition Rises Again, Students Have Significantly Less Beer Money

As if keg prices, food prices, and the cost of gas weren't still high (I don't care if gas prices have gone down, they're still really high), the news reminds us that things can get worse.

College tuition has increased, on average, 6.4% this year, MSNBC Reports. While reasons vary from inflation to the sad economic story we are dealing with, colleges are still asking for more money:

...[In] the current academic year, the average list price of tuition and fees at four-year public universities rose $394, or 6.4 percent, to $6,585 for in-state students. At private colleges, prices rose $1,399, or 5.9 percent, to $25,143, according to the annual “Trends in College Pricing” report from the College Board.

MSNBC tried to remind us that many students don't pay the "full list price" and are offered "financial aid," they don't seem to mention that that can range from a full-tuition scholarship to $5,000 (which, in the scheme of things barely counts.)

Inflation is getting most of the blame, with experts saying that overall inflation is unusually high at 5.6%:

“No one really thinks it’s easier to pay for college just because other prices have gone up,” said Sandy Baum, economics professor at Skidmore College and senior policy analyst at the College Board. While families may postpone other big-ticket items, “It’s harder to wait to go to college than to wait to buy a car,” she said.

Still, there were some establishments that were able to combat the inflation:

Public two-year colleges once again were the biggest bargain — and did the best job holding down prices. Average list prices there rose $108, or 4.7 percent, to $2,402. But factoring in financial aid, the College Board estimates the average net cost is only about $100.

But for those trying to get an Ivy League or private education, the economic hurt is there.

Ok, I know it's hard out there to be a Trojan, guys-- with terrible tuition, sudden rainstorms, and midterm season wrapping up and all. Keep your heads up though, and fight on!
