Chasing the Heisman Trophy can be a mercurial affair— especially if you’re USC quarterback Mark Sanchez who over the past three weeks has gone from second place in the Orlando Sentinel poll Heisman Trophy poll, to dropping off the poll completely after losing to Oregon State, to popping back up to third place after USC took down University of Oregon, and now falling off the charts again after the Arizona State game.
After the poor USC performance against ASU, the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin reported:
The No. 8-ranked Trojans turned in one of their ugliest quarters in recent USC history despite defeating Arizona State 28-0 in front of an announced 85,956 at the Coliseum.
Quarterback Mark Sanchez, still considered a Heisman Trophy candidate in some circles, ended that long-shot hope with a third quarter that consisted of four turnovers (one fumble, three interceptions).
If USC has shown us anything this season, though, it’s that we can’t underestimate the capriciousness of the team. The Trojans seem to have mastered the rebound, and the talented Sanchez may indeed reappear on the Heisman Trophy list. Again.
