Belligerent hockey star Sean Avery is about to become sloppy seconds himself after the Dallas Stars fired his ass for inappropriate comments.
Two weeks ago, before a game against the Calgary Flames, Avery called the media over to him so that he could share this little gem: “I am really glad to be back in Calgary, I love Canada. I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don’t know what that’s about. Enjoy the game tonight.”
Cue the outrage.
Avery was suspended for six games, but the Stars have announced that Avery will not rejoin the team. He’s currently seeking treatment for “anger issues” at an undisclosed location, but who knows where he will end up next. The details are not yet clear – Avery could be traded, sent to the minors, or bought out next summer.
Is this a major overreaction to a stupid comment? Most definitely. But, perhaps it’s not if you look at the bigger picture. Avery is known for being… difficult. Need proof? With the help of a Sports Illustrated timeline, here’s a little overview of Avery douchebaggery through the years:
2000-2001 Avery insults rivals, calling Shane Doan “the NHL’s most overrated player,” Paul Kariya “a diver,” and Andy McDonald “an arrogant little midget.”
Sept. 2005 In response to Denis Gauthier bodychecking/giving a concussion to Jeremy Roenick, Avery angered the French-Canadian public by saying: "I think it was typical of most French guys in our league with a visor on, running around and playing tough and not back anything up."
Oct. 2005 During a game, Avery allegedly calls Oilers forward Georges Larauq, a black Canadian, a monkey. Avery denies it and it’s never actually proven.
April 2006 After Anaheim broadcaster and former NHLer Brian Hayward criticizes Avery on-air, Avery shoots back calling Hayward an "embarrassment", a "(terrible) announcer" and a "(terrible) player." In the same month, Avery gets in a fight with coach Mark Hardy at practice and is suspended from the Los Angeles Kings.
April 2008 A rule is named after the douchebaggery of Avery after he waves his hands and stick in front of Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur to distract him. The trick isn’t illegal, but it is unsportsmanlike, leading the NHL to create “The Sean Avery Rule” to cover these situations.
Nov. 2008 In a game against Boston, Avery yells obscenities at a heckler, says obscene remarks to a woman in the crowd and gets an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for his part in a brawl.
