You would think if you won a gold medal in the Olympics, you’d be a little careful with it. Not so for Brendan Hansen, a product of the University of Texas.
The American swimmer who graduated in 2005 with a degree in kinesiology brought pride to his alma mater when he recently won the gold for the 400-meter medley relay, the same race that led to Michael Phelps famous eighth medal.
That pride was soon in jeopardy though when Hansen lost the medal during a flight from Philadelphia to Texas. He was heading back to Austin after a bachelor party in Philadelphia. Why, oh why, did he think it was a good idea to bring the medal to a bachelor party of all places? Everyone knows that bachelor parties never end well, and this one was no exception.
As you can imagine, Hansen was more than a little upset about the loss. The Dallas News reports his reaction:
"For about 18 hours, I was sweating bricks," the American breaststroke specialist said Tuesday. "What a roller coaster of emotions the last few days have been."
Damn right he was sweating bricks. Fortunately, the medal was recovered a day later when a woman found it on the floor of a Southwest Airlines plane and handed it over to the police.
Next time maybe Hansen will think twice before bringing his medal in his carry-on.

Stumble It

"Next time maybe Hansen will think twice before bringing his medal in his carry-on. "
I suppose you think putting something in your checked baggage is smarter than having it with you in your carry on luggage? Obviously you haven't travelled lately. Posted 09/19/2008 04:30 AMReply
