Big Brother Does VU
Vanderbilt is watching you.
Seriously.

In a recent email to students, Chief Information Security Officer Mark Johnson wrote:

"Please understand that Vandebilt utilizes applications that scan electronic communications in order to:

• Protect the privacy and identity of our students, patients, faculty, and staff
• Detect or prevent damage to electronic systems or theft of data due to malicious programs, unauthorized access, or application flaws
• Comply with state, federal, and local laws and regulations

Additionally, please understand that unencrypted electronic communications are not guaranteed to be private. A good rule of thumb is to consider any unencrypted electronic communication (e-mail, chat, web-pages, downloads, etc.) traveling across Vanderbilt's network and/or the Internet as a postcard rather than a sealed envelope, because the contents of such communications can be viewed by people other than the intended recipient."

Translation: Everything you do on your computer or any computer hooked up to the Vanderbilt network can be tracked. And although you may be reading this, Mr.Johnson, F*ck you.

Alas, there go the days of emailed cheat sheets, invite-only frat parties, and amateur pornography. We are being watched, avidly and constantly.

You tell me:
When it comes to matters of security, how much is too much?
Vanderbilt is doing the right thing in protecting in email/webpage surveiellance. They are protecting their students from any possible harm.
WTF, Vanderbilt?! Stop reading my juicy G-chat!
