Brother of UW Student Killed in Off-Campus Fire
One person died in a fire on Bedford st. Sunday, while three other residents escaped with injuries.

While no cause for the fire has been reported as of yet, firefighters on the scene said Sunday that all three fire alarms had been removed.

Dean of Students Lori Berquam sent an email to students Monday morning, shedding light on the tragedy and listing off "several things you can always do to decrease your risk [of a fire]," including:

- Smoke detectors: Make sure you have working smoke detectors with new
batteries mounted on the wall. Never, ever, disable the unit. If you
don't have smoke detectors, contact your landlord.
- Take great care with lit candles, incense or cigarettes.
- Keep a fire extinguisher in your apartment or house.
- Come up with an escape plan. If you have a fire escape, know how to
access it.
- Consider purchasing fire or renters insurance.

This comes only a week after another fire left several UW students homeless. More as the story develops...
