Serbian Fugitive Moves On With His Life

Miladin Kovacevic, a former Binghamton basketball star, has signed a contract with a Serbian basketball club. He is expected to show up for practice starting August 10.

Kovacevic, 20, is wanted in the United States for beating a fellow student into a coma in a bar fight that took place on May 4. The victim, Bryan Steinhauer, 22, is still in critical condition. Kovacevic fled the country to Serbia early last month after a brief stint in prison.

Kovacevic’s refusal to return to the United States to face charges has sparked a “diplomatic crisis” between the U.S. and Serbia. Serbian officials want U.S. officials to hand over the full case file so they can determine whether Kovacevic should be prosecuted in Serbia.

While the diplomats are trying to negotiate what should be done, Kovacevic is clearly moving on with his life knowing the guy he beat up is desperately clinging on to his own.
