The Great University Bookstore Markup

The Great University Bookstore Markup
With friends like these...

Yeah, we all know textbook wholesalers would sell their own mother up the river for the right price, but that doesn't make it any less infuriating when it smacks you in the face like this .

Note the stamp on the inside of the book "Why Is Sex Fun?" It says the book had been sold used in 2005 for $7.50. Note the receipt. It says the book was sold at University Bookstore for $11.25. That's a $3.75 markup, or 150% for those of you that aren't math majors.

Yeah, markups are part of the biz, but at least lie to my face about it, University Bookstore. At least act like leaving that information on the most prominent page of the book might dissuade me from removing it from your vaults at great personal cost. What's that? You're going to hit me in the face with your codpiece instead? Oh, University Bookstore...

It's called a business, genius, and it's the product of the whole capitalist thing the country's got going on. University Bookstore struggles to compete with various other textbook retailers, not to mention its mainstream competition such as Borders. It's why markups occur. Convince everyone to stop going to Borders & Barnes & Noble, and you'll get that oh-so-handy sex book of yours for $3.75 less. Posted 04/30/2008 9:28 PMReply

Why would I choose to pay $3.75 more when I could get it for less at Barnes & Noble? It's called economics, genius. Posted 11/04/2008 2:56 PMReply
