High Point Scores High Points On Housing Scale; Vanderbilt Fails To Catch Up

Last week, USC chief contributor Beached Blonde provided us with a list of the country's most spoiled college students. High up on that list was High Point University in North Carolina. Now, while Beached Blonde mentioned that the students there were spoiled, she made no mention of how very very fortunate they really are.

The other day, I came across this article about colleges enticing students with ever growing lists of amenities. The article mentioned Vanderbilt for our new freshman Commons--"The Commons will offer wireless Internet, well-lit, spacious gathering places, cookie kitchens, and an award-winning, energy-efficient center that offers dining, a gourmet grocery store and a fitness facility," --Blah, Blah, Blah, from those juniors stuck in tenement-style dorms on the wrong side of campus.

My own housing bitterness aside--I was shocked at the amount of--well, wonderfulness, that High Point students are provided: a concierge desk that provides any information that 411 possibly could for free, as well as dry cleaning and personal wake up calls, in-dorm hot tubs, an ice cream truck with free frozen treats, valet parking, and Starbucks gift cards on your birthday. And our tuition could eat theirs! Has anybody actually heard of High Point? Or know anyone who goes there? Bottom line, this place sounds too good to be true.

Back to my own bitterness for a second--According to the same article, while Vanderbilt students revel in being la creme de la creme of Tennessee, even UT's got us beat amenities-wise. Upperclassmen live in apartments with private bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens and washer dryers. Step it on up, Chancellor Gee Zee!
