“There are more than 380,000 student-athletes and most of them will go pro in something other than sports”—that is especially true if they get caught violating school or NCAA policy, which effectively strips them of playing eligibility and the possibility of a professional career in sports. When they're not failing academically or displaying non-compliant behavior, college players are oftentimes breaking federal law, facing DUIs, DWIs and even OWIs (operating while intoxicated).
It’s no secret that college athletes have it easy. They get pampered with money (scholarships), free things, and campus stardom. Still, there are times when the NCAA has to draw the line between taking advantage of privileges and abusing them.
Here’s a list of schools that have had to suspend athletes for dumb misdemeanors this year:
*University of Georgia: UGA football players were charged with battery. Their crime? Touching a pregnant woman’s stomach and making lewd comments. Great. Now you upset the baby. All you had to say was earmuffs.
*Georgia Tech: Police arrested a freshman cornerback Jerrard Terrant for rape and sodomy. You’d think he’d get away with rape. But add in sodomy and you’re screwed.
*University of Alabama: Charged with a first-degree robbery (of $26), freshman football player Jeremy Elder was suspended from the team. I guess the redshirts don’t get enough moolah. Moreover, senior linebacker Jimmy Johns was caught dealing cocaine. So maybe Alabama just deprives all of its athletes of money.
*Mississippi State University: Two football players fired their guns near dorms on campus in May and apparently violated Possession of a Firearm on Educational Property. More football players…I spot a trend here.
*Slippery Rock University: However, football players and guys aren’t the only ones getting into trouble. At SRU, athletes of the women’s track team violated the school’s “incriminating photos” policy by posting party pics on Facebook. Don’t forget to tag me! LoL.
