What Not To Do At A Virginia Tech Job Fair... Or Any Job Fair For That Matter

It’s job fair season, guys and gals. And here is a list of some don’ts you should definitely avoid doing if you’re trying to get a job…ever. (Some of these are from my own experiences. Learn from other people’s mistakes so you won’t make an ass out of yourself too.)

1. Don’t wink at the employer. For some, it’s sort of become a habit that’s hard to break. You can’t help it. Last week you winked at a baby. It happens. But you should really try to control your winking because it’s not going to get you the job.

2. Don’t wear white socks with your nice shoes. You’re not Michael Jackson and if you were, you probably still wouldn't get the job. Plus, if you think they’re not going to notice. Wrong. They might even point it out. If that’s the case just say you’re colorblind and give them a wink. You’re already not going to get the job…might as well go out with a bang.

3. Don’t talk to the same company twice at job fairs. I made this mistake last week. Don’t be confused because every booth looks the same but the people were different. If you do make the same mistake I did, pretend like you came back to ask another question. Just don’t give them your résumé twice.

4. Don’t stare at their chest. Guys, seriously…they’ll notice when you’re talking to their boobs. It might be easier to talk to them than their actual face, but it’s not going to get you the job. Get the job, then you can stare (but check on your company's sexual harassment policy first).

5.  Don't chew gum.  It's not classy.  I mean, if you're going to do it, at least offer the employer a piece.

6. Don’t hug the employer. Stick to strictly handshakes and nothing else. Even if you feel that you have made a strong bond with the employer after speaking to them, it’s not okay to hug them. Again, get the job, then you can hug (again, check the sexual harassment policy first).

Well, there you have it. I wished someone wrote a list like this before I attended job fairs. I could have had a job by now….maybe. If only I could control that winking.
