Notre Dame Has No Sense of Humor

Notre Dame Has No Sense of Humor

In today's school newspaper, the following viewpoint letter was submitted by Robert, an offended student in regard to a recent comic strip published in the paper.

"The text for the comic reads: "The Cleveland Browns announced that rookie QB Brady Quinn will be starting for their game against the Bills next Monday. In related news, you just got an erection."

I am astonished that this particular comic strip made its way into our dear Observer. I can only assume that the comics page editor was overtired that day. David Cavadini, you have offended my sensibilities and insulted your readers' intelligence. Did you think that this strip could pass unnoticed?"

Offended?!? Like personally offended? God damn it, Notre Dame can be so lame sometimes. We all harbor a love for Brady, and for some, that love may push the limits of heterosexuality. It's an insult to your intelligence if you consider this a typical a boner joke, or at worst, homosexual slander. To the contrary, I think it's an interesting dynamic of the student body to explore, as Mr. Cavadini is making a profound statement about the potential conflict between the University's disdain for homosexuality and the student body's loving embrace of Notre Dame's football icons.

I forgot that Notre Dame teaches students that the erection is where the devil harvests the root of all sins. That's a joke too, Robert. Actually, I'm more appalled by how humorless some Notre Dame students can be than by the actual comic. For those of you from other fun-loving schools, I feel a responsibility to warn you that there are some students at Notre Dame who do actually have a sense of humor.
