Ridiculous CNN Story of the Day: Dating a Mama's Boy

OK, so CNN is partnered with Frisky.com, a spunky, punchy site for women. But somehow CNN doling out advice on dating a mama’s boy still seems out of place.

Especially when the article begins: When your relationship is full of drama created by his mama, the road to romance can feel like a traffic jam -- with her in the driver's seat.

Oh CNN, you’re just so hip.

But despite the odd source of the story, the advice may actually help many a college girl who wishes her frat guy could please just decide what shirt to buy without calling mommy. The article tackles the topic of guys who haven’t quite cut the umbilical cord in a Q&A sesh with Debra Mandel, Ph.D. and author of “Dump That Chump: from Doormat to Diva in Only Nine Steps – A Guide to Getting Over Mr. Wrong.”

In response to what causes a man to be a mama’s boy, Dr. Mandel answers:

Guys who have always been coddled and indulged by their moms often become "mama's boys." Moms who do this tend to be fairly needy (especially when it comes to male attention) and therefore seek to create a relationship in which someone will be very dependent upon her. As the son of this type of mother grows up, he often fears that his mom will fall apart if he so much as moves to the neighboring zip code. So, it becomes a mutually parasitic relationship; both mom and son are afraid to be independent of each other.

In essence, your guy has become his mom's pseudo-husband, and consciously or unconsciously, he likes the importance of this role. Of course, this makes it hard for him to commit to another woman -- namely, you.

Mandel suggests trying to coax him to make some changes, but if he can’t take baby steps, cut the baby loose.

So maybe the news network does offer some wise words to live by.

But, if CNN starts telling us, “Where to Touch Him To Unleash His Inner Passion,” forget it.
