Wes on Broadway: In the Heights

Wes on Broadway: In the Heights

In the Heights is a musical on Broadway. You need tickets. For real. It's a refreshing, energetic musical written and composed by Lin-Manuel Miranda '02. It's like nothing else you've heard of in the New York theater scene, especially when it comes to Broadway. Why is that? Because it engages thoroughly with themes like immigration, national and ethnic pride, poverty, inner city life, and what it's like being a racial and economic minority at a traditionally white, upper-class educational institution. One of the musical's protagonists is exactly that, a Latina named Nina Rosario who is back home in New York from her first year at Stanford. It is amazing to see a young woman of color's perspective on Broadway. It is historic to see the racial and economic diversity of the city being explored on the stage through the words and ways of someone who grew up in the thick of it, as Lin did. (In the previously posted youtube.com video of the interview with Lin, he speaks to the influence growing up in the inner city had on him.)
