Wesleyan student Dan Lachman '09 operates his own t-shirt company called Sharp Shirter, which he started in 2005. Since its establishment, Sharp Shirter has been sold at Lord & Taylors, boutiques and online.
In 2007, the company grossed $30,000 in sales and hopes that sales will rise by 30 percent in 2008. In addition to t-shirts, the company sells sweatshirts, dresses and laptop skins.
According to a Washington Post feature, Lachman first started creating signature t-shirts by using iron-on decals of his favorite movies titles in ninth grade. Encouraged by the success of the t-shirts amongst his friends, he decided to take the designs one step further.
Later, he came up with goofy phrases and e-mailed T-shirt companies, begging them to print his ideas. They refused. "I was like, whatever, I'll do it myself," Dan recalls.
Dan now works with up and coming artists to create his t-shirt designs. After first connecting with a designer through Craigslist while still in high school, Dan now has a staff of around twenty-four artists from around the world.
Dan started the company using money he made as a camp counselor the year before starting Wesleyan. Dan is now a psychology major at the University.
