Drug Use at Yale on Par With Other Universities, Roughly 35% Have Dabbled

In an effort to ascertain the prevalence of drug use on campus, the Yale Daily News circulated a poll to roughly 600 undergraduates to find out if they had used or seen someone else use drugs during their time in New Haven.

Of the 300 respondents, roughly 35 percent said they had used an illegal substance at Yale, and at least, 47 percent knew of 10 or more Yalies that had.

While these statistics may appear abnormally high, they are actually in line with the national average of 36.6 percent. This fact, of course, doesn’t surprise members of Yale’s drug culture.

The Yale Daily News reports:

One freshman in Ezra Stiles College, Fred, who described himself as “overly social,” said that because his acquaintances span class years and residential colleges, he has access to a wide array of possible suppliers.

Fred also said he is not surprised that other Yalies use drugs.

“You have a lot of smart people in one place,” he said of Yale. “Of course there are drugs.”

Wait – since when does intelligence equate to drug use?

If anything, it’s the fact that many Yalies come from well-off families that’s contributing to the drug problem, not the student body’s collective intelligence.
