Stanford Alum Chokes in 5,000-meter Semifinal

Some college students just can’t handle the pressure of the Olympics.

Last week, Alicia Sacramone, Brown ‘10, cost the U.S. a gold medal in women’s gymnastics when she fell, not once but twice. This week, 26-year-old Stanford alumnus, Ian Dobson, tanked in the 5,000-meter semifinals, placing in an abysmal ninth place.

The Contra Costa Times reports:

Running 14 minutes, 5.47 seconds and failing to advance. [Ian] was not happy about his performance.

"That was embarrassing to go out there like that. I think I let the whole thing get in my head a little bit," said the first-time Olympian. "I tried to go out there and soak it up a little bit and look around. I think it made me a little more nervous."

Dobson said the warm, muggy weather had no impact on his race.

"I got the heat sheet yesterday and instead of being like, 'All right, I'm going to take out some of these guys,' I was just like, 'Oh shoot, this is going to be hard. I'm not going to make it,' he said, apologizing to others, including ex-Cal star Bolota Asmerom, who ran the event at the U.S. trials.

Apology not accepted, Dobson.

Good thing Yalies, like Sada Jacobson, are still upholding the integrity of higher education.

Do the math. Had Alicia gotten back the 1.6 she gave away with her falls, the US still would have lost by over a point. China had higher start values, that's why they won. Even if the US had made NO mistakes, they would have ended up silver. If you want someone to blame, I'd go with Martha Karolyi, who did NOT do her homework and keep up with the Chinese progress on uneven bars. She assumed they would be nervous and make mistakes, and she was wrong. Alicia has been a tremendous gymnast for the US during this entire Olympic cycle, and she doesn't deserve criticism from someone who didn't even crunch the numbers before condemning her!
