Stephen Hawking Unveils Terrifying $1.8M Clock at the University of Cambridge

Here are three things you never thought you’d hear in a sentence together: Stephen Hawking, a $1.8M gold clock, and a demonic grasshopper. The brilliant Oxford-bred scientist was at the University of Cambridge this Friday to unveil what is possibly the world’s most horrifying clock. The monstrosity took 7 years and $1.8M to make and was created by inventor and horologist (clockologist?) John Taylor as a tribute to John Harrison, who invented the “grasshopper escapement” mechanism. Ohh, so that explains the giant demon fiend on top of it.


The clock flashes blue lights and as it spins round the demonhopper gobbles up the time like the harbringer of the apocalypse that it is. I wish my campus had anything this cool on it. What do we get? Statues. Libraries. Trees. Lame.
