Remember typing class in high school? No? Well, it probably involved this fun – and I use the word ‘fun’ loosely here – piece of software called “Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing.”
Not sure why educators thought they could fool students into learning how to type with a boring, dull, repetitive collection of mini-games, but they did.
Video games, like Rock Band and Halo, are fun, but one that involves trying to type quickly (and accurately) just so a badly rendered penguin doesn’t die simply doesn’t compare.
Where’s the challenge? Self-enrichment isn’t motivation enough.
