Ann Coulter Wannabe Advises College Students Against Sociology, Gay and Lesbian Lit, & Pretty Much Everything Else

She’s blond, unapologetically conservative, and hysterical over progress. No, it’s not Ann Coulter; it’s Ashley Herzog, a senior at Ohio University. Herzog must have been feeling festive when she wrote a recent back to school article for the Townhall.com called “College Classes for Conservatives to Avoid.” The article details telltale signs of—uh-oh!—potentially liberal college courses. Amongst her list of classes to avoid are “English classes that revolve around the writings of some allegedly oppressed group,” “classes with words like ‘Non-Western’ and ‘Multicultural’ in the title,” and anything in the sociology department. These are evidently classes that waste time and money since they may involve considering The Dreaded Other.

According to Herzog:

When school starts in the fall, many college students will be paying exorbitant tuition to universities that offer a silver platter of worthless courses: classes in Marxism, prostitution (Sociology of the Sex Industry is all the rage), “queer theory,” pornography, and rock and rap music. While some of these classes are easy to spot as non-educational, others masquerade under legitimate-sounding names in mainstream academic departments…

Don’t register for English classes that revolve around the writings of some allegedly oppressed group, such as “Gay and Lesbian Literature” or “Women and Writing.” These classes typically have nothing to do with great, or even good, literature. I once signed up for a Women’s Writing class to fill a requirement. Did we study the classic works of history’s best female authors, such as the Bronte sisters and Jane Austen? Nah. Instead, the class mostly revolved around short pieces by untalented women who whined about America’s “sex/gender system.”

Well now that we’ve heard from Miss Teen Neocon, we know where to find short pieces by an untalented woman who whines about America’s liberal arts/humanities educational system. Never fear though, Fox News probably needs someone like Miss Herzog to make phonetic comparisons between the names of Barack Obama and Osama bin Laden.

So much for freedom of expression. Ashley Herzog presents a different point of view and author/editor Tracy O'Neill attacks. I think O'Neill's "Dreaded Other" in this case is anyone who does not share his/her liberal political philosophy. Ms. Herzog simply pointed out the "emperor has no clothes" aspect of many liberal arts classes. Learn to live with it. Posted 09/04/2008 12:45 PMReply

So, anonymous, college students should be isolating themselves from classes that might offer a range of knowledge and experiences other than their own because they're potentially liberal? Tracy is using her freedom of speech to point out the close-minded views of many neo-cons who choose to limit (or cut off) their exposure to ANY alternative subjects or points of view. It is ridiculous, especially in this day and age, to not acknowledge that there exist other opinions and by willfully secluding oneself, you help perpetuate the culture of hatred and bigotry that we are trying to move past. You are completely missing the point of her "Dreaded Other"...try taking a "liberal" class or two. You might learn something. Posted 09/04/2008 2:05 PMReply

She is right--lit classes with any bias but quality are simply forums for mediocre nerds to inflict the writings of their untalented friends and colleagues on students. Not only conservatives, but all free thinking students should avoid such classes and professors. Posted 09/04/2008 2:39 PMReply

I'm cool with her letting others in on what classes to avoid if they lean conservative. Unfortunately, in most college classes (especially those that lean to the activist or controversial side of an issue), if you don't agree with the professor, or even worse the grad assistant, they will give you cruddy grades until you agree with them. They claim to be open-minded, but only as long as you subscribe to their point of view. Posted 09/04/2008 6:00 PMReply

People like her represent the very reason why I moved out of that state and will never return. Posted 09/04/2008 6:34 PMReply

She isn't allowed to be republican, I mean she goes to OHIO University for Protestant Christ's sake! Therefore she obviously has no money or pedigree and is not allowed to be a conservative prep like myself because she simply can't be living the same luxurious status quo I live in. I thought college was a place to explore different viewpoints and, you know, think for yourself? When did educatating yourself become a bad thing? And before we compare her to the succubus that is AC, even crazier and more offensive quotes will be needed. Posted 09/05/2008 11:36 AMReply

OK folks, if you know this Tracy O'Neill character, you can see how far left this **** swings. She is Michael Moore sympathizer, for the love of God. One of those Gay & Lesbo Lit courses probably changed her life. Posted 09/06/2008 12:29 AMReply

I have absolutely no idea how it works in the US (and I make no apologies) but we have respect for *SHOCK HORROR* interdisciplinary appreciation of multiple disciplinary contributions to academic thought. Narrow minded citations, such as, 'one of those Gay & Lesbo Lit courses probably changed her life', would have been greeted with, at best, a good argument, or, at worst, a slap! Any UK arts, humanities or social science course will require a decent grasp of interdisciplinary craft; and so will any decent university! Posted 12/10/2008 9:37 PMReply

Also, why is she dressed in a negligée? Posted 12/10/2008 9:41 PMReply
