KU Tangles Over T-Shirt

In the year of the T-shirt, the University of Kansas has embroiled itself in yet another clothing crisis. Just after KU prevailed in a copyright infringement suit against Joe-College.com, the university had its T-shirts in a twist again.

This time, the controversy surrounds a picture of Governor Kathleen Sebelius and a certain T-shirt with “Barack Chalk Jayhawk” written across the front. The politically correct university worries that the message, a spinoff of the school’s traditional chant “Rock Chalk Jayhawk,” may imply that they endorse the Democratic candidate.

After Obama used the phrase to address supporters from the school, the Young Democrats club got permission to print 100 shirts to be distributed only to group members. Yet somehow one landed in the hands of the governor, and once the photograph got out, requests came pouring in.

Enter the Kansas Athletics Department, who stepped in to stop production of the shirts.

Forget political partisanship and trademark mumbo jumbo - My problem with the whole debacle lies more with the fact that one nonsensical chant has simply replaced another.
