Lunch Break: Jon Stewart's 1994 Interview With Conan O'Brien

Back before the Daily Show, Jon Stewart wore black leather jackets and hosted a talk show on MTV. As you can imagine, the Jon Stewart Show wasn’t nearly as popular as Stewart’s current gig, but it had its moments, including this hilarious interview with a young Conan O’Brien.

This 1994 interview took place during the early days of O’Brien’s tenure as the host of “Late Night.” Back then, his show was still struggling to find its voice, and more or less, no one expected Conan to last very long. After all, he had no on-screen experience prior to hosting the show; before then, he had been a writer on The Simpsons, working behind the scenes writing jokes.

However, many comedians supported Conan’s efforts, and they tried to do anything they could to get him more exposure and recognition within the mainstream media. After all, there were only so many people a veritable “nobody” like Conan could reach during his 12:30 time slot. Naturally, Jon Stewart lent a helping hand by inviting Conan onto his show and letting him ramble on about his experiences meeting the then-President George Bush Sr.

Still, it was clear from the moment when Conan stepped out that the interview was destined for greatness, because there’s something intrinsically funny about a 6ft. 4in. Conan standing next to a 5ft. 7in. Stewart.
