The Reuters copywriter responsible for this double entendre-laden headline must really, really enjoy his job – that is, if he still has it.
At first glance, one may assume that this headline precedes a news story about the gay pride march that took place two weeks ago. However, they’d quickly realize that it’s actually about a recent race between Olympic bronze medalist Walter Dix and Tyson Gay.
Yes, there is something unmistakably “off” about the diction used. But, is it merely a coincidence or the product of two unfortunately named athletes going toe-to-toe with another?
The Internet, which has quickly turned this into its latest meme of choice, doesn’t believe it is, and frankly, I think they may be right. After all, the rest of the article is riddled with similar imagery.
The Reuters article reads:
"It wasn't bad, but I was a little fatigued toward the end," Gay said. "I tried to stay relaxed and bring it home, but it wasn't enough."
Dix, who won the 100 meters and placed second at the U.S. nationals last weekend, said his race experience had helped, "but I'm a little beat up, too."
"I was a little sloppy out of the blocks, but I was able to hold on," he added. "Tyson gave me great competition."
Maybe the Internet, nay life has sullied my mind, but the preceding text reads like a piece of erotica, not a Reuters story.
Still, you have to give the copywriter credit: he turned a dry article about racing into an Internet phenomenon. The Internet traffic alone should guarantee his job for years to come.
You're welcome.
