The recent mini-recession has students scrambling for food and cash.
Facebook groups called “I Ain’t Afraid To Be On Food Stamps” and “I’m In College and I Got On Food Stamps” spurred an unlikely investigation into the plight of the financially challenged college student. It appears that cash-challenged students, who would normally subsist on a part-time income or work-study, are now turning to public assistance for help, despite the social stigma. Furthermore, famished students (giving up on stealing from the cafeteria) take their stomachs to the nearest food bank for groceries as the price of food continues to increase. College students never have healthy relationships with cash and in an arid economical climate, we could all use a little help.
If you are strapped for cash, here are several suggestions to save some dollars (even if you spend it on a beer-crazed night out):
Go Freegan!
Glorified dumpster diving may save you a little green. The trash of a local supermarket is chock full of fruits and vegetables that are still edible.
Plug your nose and take the dive!
What’s Good For The Homeless, Is Good For You.
Food banks, soup kitchens, programs to feed the hungry, it’s all game. You don’t even have to wear your dirty sweats. You’re just a person in need like everyone else.
The Salvage Grocery Store
This store has received the label “Dented Can Store,” but not all of the items here are dented. You can find great discounts on non-perishable goods. Search a directory to find one in your area.

Collect all of the local circulars and newspapers to get the best price on products. It takes time and a little extra effort but you will save a lot more. Check the school lobby for special student coupons and local student discounts.
Carry Your Student ID
Local establishments give student deals and some chains offer students cards, if you show your school ID with a current sticker.
