Fresno Resident Graduates From Harvard With a 4.0 GPA, Now Works at Blockbuster

Fresno Resident Graduates From Harvard With a 4.0 GPA, Now Works at Blockbuster

If you think graduating from an Ivy League school is difficult, imagine doing it with straight A’s.

Last spring, Brittney Lane, 22, accomplished this daunting task by graduating from Harvard with a perfect 4.0 – a feat that has only been achieved six times since the Ivy League university computerized its records in 1982.

Thanks to her four years of intensive studying, Brittney now holds a highly prestigious job at Blockbuster Video – until she gets into law school.

The FresnoBee reports:

Of her Harvard straight A's, Lane said: "It didn't seem very real at first."

Lane said her quest for the perfect report card began in her freshman year after she aced a difficult music studies paper and realized "I can do this." While playing Trivial Pursuit with a group of male dorm friends, she mentioned her goal.

"They basically said, 'You're out of your mind. Don't even try it,' “Lane said.

They also told her as a woman, it would be especially hard.

Wait – why would gender matter? Does the lack of a Y-chromosome make women incapable of perfection?

Doubt it.

The only thing that should matter is the mental welfare of the individual attempting such a task, because a person with such a thirst for self-inflicted pain is either mentally unsound or a superhuman living amongst a sea of slacking mere mortals.

Yeah -- definitely the latter.

Brittney, if are reading this, congratulations on your tremendous accomplishment at Harvard.

A few decades ago I graduated from a top university 2nd in my class (out of 14,000 students).

The economy was in recession and a job I had lined up for after graudation fell through when the company went bankrupt.

So, for more than a year after accomplishing my academic feat, I repossessed rented TVs and VCRs from renters who had fallen behind on their payments. I spent more than half of my working day walking around the worst of the worst housing projects in New York City. I made $290 every two weeks and that included an extra $50/month for my willingness to visit these housing projects at night (resulting in my having the highest repo yield per day).

Ten years later I had a wonderful wife, three beautiful children, the best job in the world (no, for all the wiseguys out there, I had not graduated to repossessing cars), many friends, and a net worth of $10 million.

Whatever you choose to pursue in life I'm sure you'll be very succesful. For the time being, if you're having trouble with any people not returning their rented movies, I can give you some tips on how to get those movies back.

I don't think they told her it would be difficult as a woman because they thought a woman wasn't smart enough. Men are aware of potential prejudice against female students by male professors. I've worried myself over whether my girlfriend's professors would unfairly mark her down because of her gender, despite her extremely high intelligence, high competence, and intense drive. it's not hard to get a 4.0 at Harvard these days. i know several people who did in the past 10 years. the grade inflation there is remarkable. Posted 09/04/2008 9:51 PMReply

This is one of the dumbest posts I have ever seen. I guarantee that Harvard hasplenty of 4.0 graduates every year, though probably that number has decreased since they have attempted to stop the grade inflation issue to which someone above already alluded. Moreover, schools known for grade DEflation-Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Northwestern, Michigan, Berkeley, for example, definitely produce their fair share of 4.0 students. Posted 09/05/2008 12:13 AMReply

@ Anonymous: Nope.

Direct quote: "Harvard officials said there have been just six graduates with perfect GPAs since the university computerized its records in 1982."

I went to UCLA. Now I'm in a good law school. For some of the year between the two, I worked at a picture frame shop for two dollars above minimum wage. There's nothing wrong with a quick job for a bit of quick cash, you twat of an article.

I actually work for Blockbuster. There's nothing wrong with that. It's an extremely easy job, pretty fun, and it pays above minimum wage (not much though).

It's not like she couldnt find a better job, so what are we supposed to be sobbing about?

Working a low-thought low-stress job must be a nice break from academics for her before she gets back into the game.

I worked in a restaurant over the summer while taking classes (for fun) and it was a rather refreshing change of pace.

Just because you go/went to a nice school doesn't mean certain jobs are beneath you.
