In my last post, I raved about Studio 54 at The Rat on Saturday night, how it was one of the more eventful nights downtown thus far; but perhaps it was too eventful. While most people were betrothed in their own little private dance parties, a violent fight erupted somewhere on the dance floor.

I'm sure most of you at BU have seen Miladin "Minja" Kovacevic around campus. Towering over the rest of us at 6-foot-9-inches and 260-pounds, he's kind of hard to miss. Best known for his stint as a forward for the basketball team in the 2006-07 season, Minja is a sophomore international student from Serbia.

Minja was arrested Sunday and charged with second-degree assault, after he repeatedly kicked an unidentified BU student in the head on The Rat dance floor. The victim suffered serious head injuries and is currently in a coma. Police received the call about the incident at 1:23 a.m, meaning the party was in full swing for BU students out and about. Apparently, hardly anyone noticed the confrontation. The victim, who was unconscious, was carried out very quickly and informally.

Minja pled not guilty to the assault charges but was remanded without bail to Broome County Jail. He has been suspended from BU.

It's scary to think that something like this could happen at The Rat, a place many students here at Bing like to think of as their second home. No one likes to see this kind of violence, and our thoughts and prayers go out to this student and his friends and family.

I know Minja personaly, I can imagine him punching someone, but to kick someone who is on the floor? its out of the question. Plus, noone knows except that kid and Minja what exactly happened. We can only assume things and arbitrage on them, but the reality is know to only both of them. Someone needed this to happen, because Minja is the only WHITE SPOT left on the team of Bearcats... This was clearly a savage attack on a uoung person about to graduate. What provoked this horrific attack? Witnesses should contack the police so that the proper punishment both penal and civil can be applied through the courts and eventually through the NYS Department of Corrections.Yet worse, let him be deportedand arrange for him to do his time in Serbia. This whole circumstance is very tragic especially for the victim who is hospitalized and may require months of intensive and highly specialized care and rehabilitation. Do we know what provoked this attack? were comments passed? Was it an anti-gay issue? Was the victim simply picked on? Was Mr.Kavacevic,not yet age 21,under the influence of drugs or alcohol? At this point there aree too many unanswered questions regarding what took place. I am sure that there are a sufficient number of witnesses who will come forward. Let there be justice, a monetary award for the victim whose family will need it to pay for his medical care, and a nice long term in prison for Mr. Kovacevic who should then be deported to his beloved Serbia. I was in the Science Library like 4 days before this all happened and Minja was sitting next to me talking to some girl about how he was 15 minutes late to basketball practice and coach would not let him practice and how he wanted to "arggghhh crush his (the coach's) head."
