I have long been convinced that the first picture on the Office of Financial Aid's website is that of Wesleyan's new superstar, Lin-Manuel Miranda. Miranda' 02 is the creator of Broadway's new favorite show "In The Heights." Miranda wrote the musical, while still a sophomore at Wesleyan for a Theater class project. The show received acclaim while off-Broadway and moved to the Broadway stage this past March.
In the Heights has received a series of international accolades. The musical was nominated for thirteen Tony’s and won four including 2008’s Best Musical and Best Original Score among myriad praise.
On November 7th, 2008, headlines declared that Universal Pictures has purchased the rights for the musical. Miranda will star as Usnavi in the film and maintain an involved partnership with Quiara Alegria Hudes, the show’s librettist.
Miranda recently reflected on the news of the purchase:
"Nearly nine years into my journey with Heights, I remain constantly humbled by all the opportunities we have been given. I am thrilled to work with Universal and help bring this story to millions of people around the world," said Miranda.
So, back to the picture, do you think it's Miranda? He definitely looks the part, including his signature hat like the one he dons for his role as Usnavi every evening on the Broadway stage. He sure has come a long way from the ’92 Theater! Compare the photo above, from Wesleyan's financial aid website to the back stage photo below of Miranda with his cast mates.
