There’s no other industry that has as many half-truths and falsehoods as the fitness industry. Today I’m going to go over the top 5 myths in the fitness world.
Some of you might disagree with me on some of these and that’s okay, let me know in the comments. BUT after contributing to Men’s Health magazine for over 10 years now, I’ve seen tons of fitness myths come and go.
So from my own personal experience and training 1000’s of clients, I’m going to share with you what I know to be the 5 biggest myths in fitness.
So what are they?…Here are the top 5 biggest myths in fitness:
# 1 – You have to do morning cardio on an empty stomach to lose fat — FALSE
I’ll start by saying this — there is research showing that you can burn proportionally more fat doing slow cardio on an empty stomach BUT you have to stop right there, because it doesn’t really matter.
There are tons of research studies showing that in the long run, cardio doesn’t work for weight loss. It might work to burn proportionally more fat of 100 calories, but if you’re only really burning 100 calories doing a slow workout in the morning, what’s that really going to do for you?
To me that is the #1 biggest myth in fitness and if you’re making that mistake you are probably not getting the results you really want.
#2 — Intervals burn muscle — FALSE
A lot of people think that if you do sprint training you are going to lose your muscle mass. This is not true. In fact what you’re going to do when you add interval training into your workout program is you are going to burn fat faster and maintain your lean body mass because you are not doing long cardio workouts.
It’s when you do long, long , long, long, LONG cardio workouts, if you are training for a marathon and you are not eating enough protein, that you will see a loss in muscle mass. So that’s when you lose muscle mass not with interval sprint training.
#3 –Drinking ice cold water will boost your metabolism (controversial)
Some people believe that drinking ice cold water will boost their metabolism and help them lose weight. I disagree. Maybe drinking ice cold water will help you burn a few extra calories but it will not get you the results you want.
You are not going to shed belly fat by drinking just a few glasses of ice cold water every day. I’m not convinced. If you disagree with me here, let me know in the comments. Maybe I’m wrong on this one?
#4 — Fasting will cause you to lose muscle mass — FALSE
This is a common myth and the reality is fasting done properly, will not cause you to lose muscle mass. Fasting is a great and simple way to lose fat fast.
In fact, a lot of my Turbulence Training Transformation Contest winners in past years used Brad Pilon’s 24hr eat-stop-eat fasting program in combination with my Turbulence Training for Fat Loss workouts and were able to achieve amazing results in just 12 weeks.
So there you go, fasting done right, will not cause you to lose muscle mass.
#5 — Crunches will give you abs. — FALSE
Tons of people believe that doing lots of crunches is going to get them abs. This simply is not true. Crunches are not the best exercise for your abs and they really are one of the most inefficient exercises you can do.
I can show you so many other exercises you can do that will get you six pack abs in just a few minutes every week and you won’t have to do a single crunch.
There you have it, my 5 biggest myths in fitness.

Not really a health-related question but… No shots facing the camera? 🙂

Fasting may not cause you to lose muscle but will cause negative epigenetic

Everything in life can be twisted to fit certain people agendas. You are on
point with the myths

I’m a certified fitness specialist, and I don’t think you need to say more.
I’m at about 2.3 to 2.5 % body fat, 5″11 and 158 LBs to be exact. I’m
shredded to the bone you could say that. I agree with your “5 Biggest
Fitness Myths” especially in the relation of crunches and great ABS.
What people should consider when it comes to ABS: Dead lift, Front Squat,
Clean, just to name a few. Also Interval Workout is a great tool.
Once body fat start getting low (About 12% for Men – 17 % for Women) then a
few ABS exercises to emphasis the Abdominis Muscle.

100 percent agree with everything said here. And theres more and more
research coming out to support it. Thanks for sharing.

I disagree with your saying steady state cardio will not bring results.
Yes, it probably won’t if you only do enough to burn 100 calories. Just
like if you cut 100 calories out of your daily diet, you wouldn’t see much
results. That’s the error in your statement. If you did a 30min cardio
workout that burns 400-500 calories, that will produce great results. Also,
cardio only burns muscle if you over train. Over training is absolutely
real, but it’s also really rare anyone does enough cardio to over train.
You could run 5 miles a day, and a proper nutrition would not cause any
muscle growth. It may also help for muscle growth. Tom Platz biked 20 miles
after leg workouts, and it didn’t hurt his leg development. Only extreme
amounts of cardio will cause muscle loss.

Hey SaiyanRace5
What can I do to loose pure body fat. I’m 25yrs old, 19% body fat, 5’6. I’m
pretty cut but I can be way better and my belly fat and inner thigh fat are
the only areas left that I can’t loose. Can you help me?

worked a ranch an started overweight and the more I ate w the hard work the
faster I lost weight an I eventually wound up looking like I was 180 pound
but on the scale I was 260. One time I boosted myself off the tractor just
using my arms and acidentallty threw myself 9 feet through the air away
from it..wound up scary strong

Myth1: the reason for morning is to avoid displacement by other
priorities. Myth2! HIIT not only works, but on a
pounds-lost-per-hour-of-exercise, it’s a complete no-brainer relative to
LSD cardio. Net, my only remaining reason for a bike century is hanging
out with friends all day.
Laurence Espiritu says
how often should i do cardio per week if I want to lose fat and maintain
muscle?
John McFarland says
Currently doing the 16/8 fast with the feast/fast model of getting a bunch
of calories on Sunday followed by zero on Monday with almost no other
changes in my diet or eating habits and it’s amazing, true fat loss and
even better losing those inches!
wolfrapter says
Ok third myth needs scientific explanation rather than “I don’t believe it”
if you’re going to convince anyone. A way to go is “Water may not give you
less body fat because it’s water. Water is used to transport fats and
acids in the body along with the blood.” OR something like that. Giving a
reason why water doesn’t help lose fat or some other shit.
Eliezer Vega says
He said he doesn’t agree with the myths but just says “that’s wrong, that’s
a myth”, doesn’t back anything he said up… + I’ve done crunches and feel
my abdomnals harden in like less then a month, doesn’t do much for my lower
abs though.
mayonasepatty says
Guess what tubbies, it’s all bullshit. You will never look like me, no
matter what you do. Now get out of my way at the gym.
Freshie Albanian says
Whoever thinks Cardio cant help lose fat is a fucking idiot.
dragonchr15 says
My only issue with leangains is that it is a low carb diet in disguise.
Berkhan empahsizes a paleo type diet so the fasting is merely a placebo
effect. I prefer pilon’s method because that is true fasting as your body
really responds to a 24 hour fast…
Rebecca Foote says
Targeting fat loss! Biggest myth ever in my opinion.
